Up Close And Personal

Carl Eck is one of those people you never forget. His quiet demeanor belies a tenacity that clients appreciate. His soft-spoken, unassuming style is genuine, as colleagues uniformly say he is a really nice guy. But in the court room, Carl's success makes believers of those who know that nice guys can finish first and on top. He's been doing that for clients for over 50 years.

Born in Williamsport, PA, Carl is one of those Notre Dame graduates with both a B.A., cum laude, and an LL.B. degree from that university. Following his graduation in 1956, he served in the U.S. Air Force's Judge Advocate General corps in France and Germany before joining the George Y. Meyer law firm in 1959. In 1963, Carl and the named partners formed Meyer Darragh Buckler Bebenek & Eck. He is the only one of the founders still engaged in full-time legal practice, and he is the president of the firm's three-member executive committee.

Carl still believes that a good lawyer can practice law in almost any arena, but even he has a reputation as one of this area's senior litigators. A fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County, Carl is a classic court room lawyer. He defends major domestic and international product designers and manufacturers accused of product defects; he defends religious institutions accused of molestation; he defends auto companies against their dealerships; and he defends both government agencies and construction companies in contract disputes.

A former member of the Product Liability Advisory Council where he helped review the Federal Rules of Discovery, Carl was also a member of both the firm's Executive Committee and chair emeritus of the Product Liability Practice Group of the American Law Firm Association of which Meyer Darragh is the only regional member.

An athlete and strong family man, Carl and his wife Jane have six grown children (three of whom are lawyers!) with whom you can often find him climbing mountains, skiing, or scuba diving. Ask his kids, Carl Eck is not easy to keep up with!
